Expanded Internet Exchange points established in Rome and Caserta by MIX.
**MIX Expands Internet Exchange Points in Rome and Caserta**
In a move to boost local internet traffic exchange and support digital growth in Italy, MIX, the country's premier public Internet exchange point, has announced the opening of two new Points of Presence (PoPs) in Rome and Caserta. These new data exchange points will serve approximately 12 million users, aiming to improve the efficiency of data exchange and promote the development and use of the Internet in Italy.
The new PoPs will be located in areas with average data download usage comparable to the most densely populated areas in Europe. They will be hosted in third-party data centers, known for their high reliability and ample space to accommodate dozens of operators from the start.
The expansion plan, initiated in 2017 with the opening of the PoP in Palermo, followed by Bologna in 2022, is part of MIX's national strategy to extend its reach beyond Milan. The ultimate goal is to foster the development of more decentralized communities of interest, supported by the presence of an IXP's PoP.
In the case of Caserta, the number of networks that can be connected to increases to 380, in addition to the local exchange point. This expansion will provide small and medium-sized operators with the opportunity to connect to an additional 260 networks present only in Rome.
MIX identifies a local partner with high growth potential and shares know-how and relationships with market leaders to create conditions that invite these major players to interconnect locally. The new PoPs in Caserta and Naples (Rome) are targeted at smaller operators, with a focus on transparency, efficiency, and local availability.
The expansion of MIX's PoPs aligns with Italy’s regulatory environment, technological adoption trends, and urban infrastructure modernization efforts. By improving local network performance, supporting digital innovation and services, and enhancing security and compliance readiness, MIX aims to reduce latency, lower bandwidth costs, and contribute to a more efficient and secure digital ecosystem in Italy.

The new Points of Presence (PoPs) in Rome and Caserta, part of MIX's expansion plan, will be situated in areas with comparable data usage to Europe's densely populated regions. These PoPs, with their hosting in reliable third-party data centers, aim to facilitate the use of data-and-cloud-computing technology and foster the growth of the Internet in Italy by connecting to various networks, promoting a more decentralized nature of the digital ecosystem.
