Startup Garage Expands into North Africa, Establishing a Presence in Casablanca

Sukhrob Gaybulloev, managing partner at AloqaVentures and the primary investor in Startup Garage, has expressed confidence that the expansion of the venture studio into Casablanca, Morocco, will serve as a launchpad for some of Uzbekistan's most promising startups. This move marks the first expansion of a Central Asian venture studio into North Africa.

Startup Garage, Uzbekistan's largest venture studio, originally supports early-stage startups across all 14 regions of the country. Since its founding, the company has incubated over 150 startups, with more than 10 securing external investments exceeding $2 million. The strategic significance of this expansion includes geographic diversification and new market access, mitigation of regional economic risks, positioning in a gateway city, and expanding the Founder Institute’s global footprint.

Casablanca, as a major economic hub in North Africa, offers access to a large and growing market distinct from Central Asia. This expansion allows Startup Garage to tap into new entrepreneurial ecosystems, customer bases, and investment opportunities outside the Russian-influenced Central Asian region. Casablanca is a prominent financial and business center in Africa with strong ties to Europe, the Middle East, and African markets, strategically positioning Startup Garage to leverage cross-regional trade, investment, and startup ecosystem growth in North Africa and beyond.

The Central Asian economies are strongly affected by Russia’s economic fluctuations, including currency weakening and reduced remittance flows due to the ongoing war-driven recession in Russia. Expanding to North Africa could hedge Startup Garage’s reliance on the vulnerable Central Asian markets, which are directly impacted by Russia’s economic conditions.

The move to Casablanca is a strategic step toward scaling Uzbekistan's innovation potential, as described by Sukhrob Gaybulloev. The company aims to serve as a cross-border platform for Central Asian startups looking to expand into global markets. The Casablanca venture studio will provide Uzbek startups with access to regional markets and will also attract North African ventures interested in expanding into Central Asia.

Muhammad Khalil, the founder of Startup Garage, stated that the international presence is designed to help Uzbek startups bridge the gap and take their ideas to the global stage. The Casablanca venture studio will focus on forming partnerships with local investors, accelerators, and entrepreneurs across the MENA region. Startup Garage's model integrates strategic guidance, mentorship, and access to capital to fast-track entrepreneurial growth.

The innovations emerging from Startup Garage have the potential to create meaningful change and position Uzbekistan as a leading innovation hub. The Uzbek government has made strides in supporting digital transformation, relaxing regulatory barriers for startups, and encouraging foreign investment. As Uzbekistan intensifies efforts to position itself as a regional hub for technology and innovation, Startup Garage's expansion into Casablanca is a significant step in this direction.

In addition to its new hub in Casablanca, Startup Garage now has an international presence in Doha, Qatar. This expansion is expected to further strengthen the company's global networks of entrepreneurs, resources, and mentors, benefiting startups' scalability and access to funding. The innovations birthed from Startup Garage could have a lasting impact on the global startup landscape, as the company continues to foster entrepreneurial growth in promising new regions.

Technology will play a crucial role in the expansion of Startup Garage's offerings in Casablanca, as the Moroccan city boasts a burgeoning technology sector. This diverse ecosystem presents opportunities for Startup Garage to collaborate with local tech-focused startups and facilitate the exchange of ideas across regional borders.

The diverse technology landscape in Casablanca, coupled with the strategic positioning of the city as a gateway to African and European markets, creates a fertile ground for Startup Garage's startup ecosystem to flourish and foster innovation, thus catapulting Uzbekistan's startups onto the global technology stage.
