BYD's Revolutionary e-Platform 3.0 Transforms the Electric Vehicle Landscape

In a groundbreaking move, Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled its next-generation electric vehicle (EV) platform, the e-Platform 3.0, at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2021. This cutting-edge technology is set to redefine the EV industry, offering significant improvements in performance, safety, efficiency, and driving experience.

The e-Platform 3.0 boasts a series of innovative features designed to optimise EV performance. One of its key advancements is the Cell-to-Body (CTB) Battery Integration, which integrates the battery cells directly into the vehicle's body structure. This not only increases torsional rigidity by up to 32-40%, enhancing crash safety and on-road performance, but also reduces weight and improves aerodynamics.

BYD's proprietary lithium iron phosphate "Blade" battery is another standout feature. Structurally integrated for improved safety, durability, and compactness, the Blade battery contributes to better packaging, a lower center of gravity, and weight reduction.

The 8-in-1 Electric Drive Module consolidates the electric motor, charger, power control units, and other components into a single module, increasing powertrain efficiency, saving space inside the vehicle for more interior room, reducing weight, and lowering running costs.

The e-Platform 3.0 also features a thermal management system that uses residual heat from the powertrain, battery, and passenger compartment for a thermal efficiency increase of up to 20%, improving battery life and performance in varied climates.

Vehicles built on this platform can achieve all-electric ranges exceeding 1,000 km (620 miles) under ideal conditions, rapid 800-volt fast charging that allows up to 150 km (93 miles) of range after 5 minutes of charging, and AWD systems capable of 0-100 km/h acceleration in as little as 2.9 seconds.

The e-Platform 3.0 is not only about performance. It is also designed with modularity and scalability in mind, supporting diverse vehicle types from compact hatchbacks to SUVs and sedans. This allows cost-effective scaling and quicker development cycles for different market needs.

BYD is the first Chinese automaker to mass-produce domain controllers, a crucial milestone for electronic architecture. The e-Platform 3.0 features a smart domain control architecture with four domain controllers, centralising functions, increasing vehicle response efficiency by 50% and compute power by 30%.

The first model to use the new e-platform 3.0 is the Dolphin, which is the first vehicle from BYD's Ocean series. BYD plans to unveil two B-class and C-class vehicles on the platform, including the upcoming Yuan Plus, a second A-class vehicle.

BYD's e-Platform 3.0 is more than just a technological leap. It's a flexible, plug-and-play solution, allowing any company in the industry that seeks both EV hardware and software or either of them to benefit from this revolutionary technology. BYD's e-Platform 3.0 is indeed the cradle of the next generation of electric cars.
