In the heart of Austin, Texas, the team at Sound Music Cities is making a significant impact on the music and entertainment industry across the United States. Founded by Don Pitts and Peter Schwarz in 2017, this innovative company has been conducting music ecosystem audits for cities such as Austin, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C.

Don Pitts, known as "The Sound Whisperer," has 30 years of experience in the music and entertainment industry. Alongside Peter Schwarz, who brings almost four decades of experience as a musician and business leader, the duo has been instrumental in helping emerging and established music cities find practical solutions to sound issues and grow their music economy.

Sound Music Cities' approach is data-driven, collecting extensive information about a city's music environment and collaborating closely with local stakeholders. The audits involve gathering personal, qualitative stories of local life as an artist and musician in a community, as well as investigating the lives of artists, local community dynamics, and the broader economic impact of music on the city.

The insights gained from these audits highlight the crucial role of artists and communities in driving a sustainable music economy. Supporting artists through policies and community programs can have a significant positive impact on the city’s broader music economy. Local community input and collaboration are central to the audits, helping ensure that initiatives reflect the real needs and contributions of the music sector at a local level.

Using the data collected, Sound Music Cities works with community members, city officials, and other stakeholders to develop music ecosystem strategies and action plans tailored to the specific needs and strengths of the city. For example, in Lafayette, this approach resulted in the creation of a phased Music Ecosystem Strategy & Action Plan focused on supporting artists and enhancing the local music economy.

The team's efforts extend beyond the city limits, as they emphasise that the impact is not just limited to the city, but also extends to the ecosystem of the region. They have identified up to 12 different ways that a single musician makes a living through music in this live and digitally connected age.

One of Sound Music Cities' most notable projects was the ATX Music Census and Needs Assessment Survey conducted in 2015. This comprehensive study provided valuable insights into the Austin music scene, helping the city to better support its local artists and music industry.

Sound Music Cities' growing list of clients includes WYEP Pittsburgh, The City of Pittsburgh Office of Nighttime Economy, The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The City of Seattle Office of Film and Music, and the Government of the District of Columbia Office of Cable TV, Film, Music and Entertainment.

As Sound Music Cities continues to grow, its data-driven approach to music ecosystem audits provides a valuable resource for cities looking to nurture and grow their local music industries. By focusing on the needs of artists and the local community, Sound Music Cities is helping to create vibrant, sustainable music ecosystems across the United States.
