Finalists for the Smart Data Challenge Prize are announced
In an exciting development, the Smart Data Challenge Prize, a new initiative launched in the UK, has announced its winner. The winning team, Smart-Catch, developed by WorldFish, has proposed an innovative solution that could revolutionise fisheries management on a national scale.
The AI-powered platform, known as the AI-SSF Sustainability Suite, integrates machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and large language models. Its purpose is to support small-scale fishers in resource-constrained regions, helping to build resilient aquatic food systems and address climate challenges in fisheries management.
Two runner-up teams, Farm Assist by Soil Solutions Ghana and Quartz Solar AI Cloudcasting by Open Climate Fix, also received recognition for their impressive contributions in related AI and data challenges. Farm Assist uses satellite imagery and machine learning to analyse soil health and support regenerative farming, while Quartz Solar AI Cloudcasting improves solar power forecasts by predicting cloud movements.
Each team participating in the Smart Data Challenge Prize will receive a grant of £50,000. In the autumn, teams will demonstrate their prototypes and make a final submission. The expert judging panel, comprising industry leaders, will select the winner with the most promising Smart Data solution.
The Smart Data Sandbox, at the heart of the challenge, contains synthetic data representing 5,000 individuals and 100 small businesses over a one-year timeline. This resource allows teams to develop, test, and refine their Smart Data prototypes.
