Game developer Sky Mavis trimmed its workforce by 21% as a strategic move aimed at accelerated expansion and reaching unprecedented growth levels by 2025.
Sky Mavis, the developer behind the popular NFT game Axie Infinity, has announced that it will be laying off 21% of its workforce, affecting around 50 staff members. The co-founder of Sky Mavis, Nguyen Thanh Trung, emphasized that this decision was not made due to financial constraints.
In a post on an unspecified platform X, Trung explained that the layoffs are part of Sky Mavis's strategy to refocus on developing core products. This refocus includes expanding the Ronin Network and wallet service, Mavis Marketplace, Axie Infinity, and developing a new Axie Infinity game.
Trung expressed anticipation for a wave of innovation and adoption for utility-driven Web3 projects. He also mentioned that Sky Mavis is preparing itself for the next growth phase as "crypto-friendly policies gain traction."
The decision to part ways with talented team members was made with careful consideration and does not reflect their contributions to Sky Mavis. Trung emphasized that the company responded to the exploitation of its Ronin network in 2022 by enhancing security and decentralization features, and adding 5 new validators.
Sky Mavis's strategy for refocusing on its core products and positioning for long-term growth involves several key initiatives. These include evolving the Ronin Network, expanding the Mavis Marketplace, focusing on Axie Infinity, and developing a new Axie Infinity game, "Atia’s Legacy."
The company's efforts collectively show Sky Mavis realigning its strategy by enhancing its blockchain infrastructure via Ronin, nurturing its marketplace, sustaining its original Axie Infinity game community, and innovating with a new MMO to drive player engagement and long-term growth.
In 2024, Sky Mavis achieved several milestones, including the Ronin wallet exceeding 10 million downloads and the Ronin blockchain becoming the "third biggest network" with more than 1.1 million daily active addresses. Despite these achievements, the company is now looking to the future with a renewed focus and a wave of innovation on the horizon.
- Within the plan to refocus, Sky Mavis aims to innovate and adopt more utility-driven Web3 projects, as expressed by co-founder Nguyen Thanh Trung.
- Sky Mavis is doubling down on its core products, such as the Ronin Network and wallet service, Mavis Marketplace, Axie Infinity, and a new game known as "Atia’s Legacy," as revealed in Trung's statement.
- As part of its strategy, Sky Mavis is positioning itself for future growth by improving its blockchain infrastructure, cultivating the Mavis Marketplace, maintaining the Axie Infinity community, and developing new games to enhance player engagement and sustain long-term success.
