Geodata Exposes in Aschaffenburg: Unveiling the City's Terrestrial Details

The city of Aschaffenburg has unveiled a new digital tool called ABGIS (Aschaffenburg Citizen GIS), marking a significant step forward in their digital strategy "Dialog City." This innovative platform, accessible and easy to use, aims to connect location-based data from various aspects of daily life, providing citizens, residents, and visitors with a wealth of information at their fingertips.

ABGIS is not just a map but a comprehensive digital resource for city information and services. It offers a 3D view of buildings with simulated shadow casting, benefiting urban planners and homeowners alike. For those navigating the city, especially during times of construction that may cause detours and longer travel times, ABGIS provides real-time information about construction sites.

Regular users of the ABGIS can expect to discover new topics, including city tours, sights, education, health, sustainability, and religious communities. The digital tool also integrates environmental and climate themes, such as drinking water protection areas, flood scenarios, and locations of municipal weather stations with live data.

In addition to these features, ABGIS offers various location-based data for daily life. This includes playgrounds, disabled parking spaces, drinking fountains, glass recycling containers, dog waste bag dispensers, and public Wi-Fi hotspots. Planned features for the ABGIS include real-time information on available disabled parking spaces and bus parking spaces for tourism.

The open-source solution on which the ABGIS of the city of Aschaffenburg is based is developed by the company geoinform. This choice promotes digital independence and cost reduction, ensuring the tool remains accessible and beneficial for the community.

Eric Leiderer, the Mayor and Digital Officer of Aschaffenburg, aims to make data visible, usable, and combinable for more transparency, participation, and service in daily life. He describes ABGIS as a valuable tool that connects location-based data from many areas of life, making it a useful tool for navigating and understanding the city of Aschaffenburg.

The ABGIS continues to grow since its launch in April 2025, reflecting the city's commitment to enhancing the quality of life through digital applications. Aschaffenburg's ABGIS is part of Aschaffenburg's digital strategy "Dialog City," demonstrating how digital applications can play a crucial role in modern city life.
