Foreign Buyers Favor German Automakers for Electric Cars - Globally - German-made electric cars are favored by consumers, not just within their home country, but globally as well.
German Electric Vehicle Brands Gain Trust Worldwide Due to Quality and Reliability
A recent survey by consulting firm BearingPoint reveals that German manufacturers are the most trusted when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) quality, even in foreign markets such as the US, China, France, and Germany.
Manuel Schuler, Global Automotive Leader at BearingPoint, was surprised by the significant lead German brands held over their competitors, ranging from three to seven percentage points, depending on the market. The survey asked respondents to rate their trust in the quality of various brands in the battery-electric car segment.
Although Chinese brands like BYD hold the top spot in some markets, German manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche are very close behind, and ahead of other Chinese brands or Tesla. In other countries, such as the US (Honda) and France (Mercedes and BMW/Audi), German brands also lead. However, in China, BYD ranks poorly in comparison to these brands.
One reason for German brands' strong position is their established reputation for engineering excellence and reliability, perceived durability, and robust build quality. Additionally, their strong brand image, consistent track record, and global presence instill confidence in customers that service and support will be available in both domestic and international markets.
Schuler notes that Chinese manufacturers face concerns about their long-term viability and service support, and that customer worries about data protection may also impact their trust in certain brands. Fortunately, the market share of Chinese manufacturers in Germany remains small, with none reaching even one percent market share in the first four months of the year.
The longevity of newer or foreign competitors remains uncertain for some consumers, which can affect their decision to purchase a vehicle from a particular brand. German brands, however, benefit from established service networks and a focus on customer support, making it easier for customers to access maintenance and repairs.
In conclusion, several factors contribute to higher trust in the quality of German electric vehicle brands, including their reputation for engineering and reliability, strong brand image and consistency, concerns about competitors’ longevity, customer experience and after-sales service, and market consistency. These factors help explain why German electric car brands enjoy higher trust among consumers in multiple countries as evidenced by the BearingPoint survey results.
