Germany Boosts Air Defense with 600 Patriot Missiles Amidst Russian Threats
Germany has allocated 1.3 billion euros to purchase around 600 Patriot missiles, aiming to bolster its air defence capabilities in 2025. This move comes amidst growing concerns over Russian military activities and Europe's limited air-defence capabilities.
The German government believes that having the capability to target vital Russian military facilities will serve as a strong deterrent against potential Russian aggression. This decision follows a series of incidents, including Russian MiG-31K aircraft intruding into Estonian airspace on 19 September and Russian drones crossing into Polish airspace on the night of 9 September.
Experts warn that Europe's current air-defence capabilities could be overwhelmed by large waves of missile attacks. To address this, European governments are encouraged to invest in European producers of missiles and support start-ups developing new weapon systems. Germany's move is a step in this direction.
Russia has also been active in military demonstrations. During the Zapad 2025 exercises in Belarus, Russia tested land- and sea-launched versions of the Zircon hypersonic missile. Additionally, Russia announced plans to build a facility in Belarus for the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile.
Germany's decision to order several hundred Patriot missiles is a significant step in enhancing Europe's air-defence capabilities. However, it is crucial for Europe to learn from Ukraine's use of long-range drone strikes and complement them with advanced long-range missiles. By investing in European producers and start-ups, Europe can reduce its dependence on US missile production and better prepare for potential threats.
