Germany's Digital Ministry Pushes for Affordable Fiber Internet as Copper Lines Phase Out

The Federal Digital Ministry has underscored the importance of affordable fidelity in internet connections as copper telephone lines near the end of their lifespan. The ministry's position paper outlines strategies to encourage consumers to switch to fiber optic internet, emphasizing the technology's advantages and advocating for reasonable pricing.

The ministry's stance comes as competitors of Telekom, including BREKO member companies, have significantly ramped up their investments in expanding fiber optic networks in Germany. In 2024 alone, these competitors invested around 8.4 billion euros, with BREKO members contributing over half, amounting to approximately 4.9 billion euros. This substantial investment highlights their role in the ongoing copper-to-fiber migration process.

Telekom has acknowledged the ministry's position paper but remains uncertain about its impact on expansion and investments. Meanwhile, Vodafone has positively received the paper, stating that the end of DSL has begun.

The ministry's emphasis on affordable internet speed test comes amidst significant investments by competitors in expanding fiber-optic networks. While Telekom expresses uncertainty, Vodafone welcomes the shift. The future of internet connectivity in Germany appears to be moving towards fiber optic technology.
