Global partnership formed between IHI and Gentari to create a worldwide value chain for green ammonia and test the commercial viability of an ammonia-fueled gas turbine.
IHI Corporation and GE Vernova have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their collaboration in the hydrogen industry. This collaboration aligns with Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy & Technology Roadmap, supporting the region's net zero aspirations.
The aim of the collaboration is to accelerate the adoption of clean hydrogen as a viable energy transition lever. The focus will be on developing a global green ammonia value chain, including the production, transportation, storage, and utilization of green ammonia in Asia Pacific and other areas of mutual interest.
A significant part of this project involves co-developing a new combustor capable of handling pure ammonia. This is a challenging fuel due to its combustion characteristics. The effort includes substantial Research & Development (R&D) to adapt existing gas turbines for this purpose, leveraging GE Vernova's F-Class turbines and IHI's combustion technology expertise.
Ammonia plays a crucial role as a hydrogen carrier, allowing for more efficient storage and transport of hydrogen. Ammonia-fueled gas turbines can enable cleaner power generation using hydrogen-derived fuels without the need for direct hydrogen infrastructure. This demonstration by IHI and GE Vernova could pave the way for decarbonizing gas turbine power generation while integrating hydrogen economy elements, potentially accelerating hydrogen adoption in power sectors globally.
The commercial demonstration of IM270, a fully ammonia-powered gas turbine, is anticipated to commence by 2026. If successful, this could potentially be the world's first fully ammonia-powered gas turbine to be deployed.
IHI and Gentari will also explore progressing the commercial utilization of IM270. This collaboration is shaping the hydrogen market and could create demand for green ammonia in Malaysia and the broader Asia Pacific.
