Global South's Opportunities within Electric Vehicle Production Chain Unveiled

The Global South is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, with countries like Nigeria and Thailand leading the charge. According to a recent report titled "Driving Change: How Electric Vehicles Can Rise in the Global South," these nations present a unique opportunity to adopt EVs and enter a future-oriented industry.

Nigeria, for instance, plans to begin domestic assembly of EVs, aiming to produce thousands annually. This move is part of a larger strategic plan that calls for international cooperation to harness opportunities in the Global South's EV sector. The Carbon Tracker Initiative's report underscores this need, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning in the EV industry's growth.

Thailand, too, has attracted substantial investment in EV production. Chinese companies have heavily invested in the country, transforming it into an electric vehicle hub. Japan's Mazda is also investing in Thailand, planning to launch five new electric vehicle models by 2027. This investment underscores the potential of the Global South in the EV sector.

The Global South plays a vital role in the EV value chain, from material sourcing to manufacturing and end-of-life recycling. Critical materials like lithium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel, crucial for manufacturing EV components, are abundant in the Global South. Localizing the processing of these materials can enhance their value and boost domestic EV production.

However, the transition to a sustainable EV ecosystem is not without challenges. The need for EV charging infrastructure is a noted challenge. Addressing this issue requires innovative solutions and partnerships. The current dependency on used ICE vehicle imports is another challenge, but leveraging renewable energy resources in EV and component production could give the Global South a competitive edge.

The report also highlights the opportunity presented by emissions legislation becoming more encompassing. As the demand for ICE vehicles declines, transitioning existing manufacturing assets in the Global South to EV production could be a strategic move.

Battery prices are dropping significantly, making BEVs more affordable. The report offers a comprehensive overview of the potential and challenges in the EV sector for the Global South. The key to success lies in innovative solutions and partnerships that can address these challenges and position the Global South at the forefront of the global shift towards electric mobility.
