Google faces criticism and scrutiny over various issues

Google and Amazon are facing a series of legal challenges and expansion plans, shaping the tech landscape in significant ways.

In a recent development, Google is embroiled in a lawsuit filed by Magnite, following an April 2021 ruling that found the tech giant had engaged in exclusionary practices to protect its ad tech dominance. The lawsuit alleges that Google has engaged in such practices to the detriment of publishers, with US publisher Penske Media Corporation, which publishes titles like Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety, being the plaintiff. The lawsuit also claims that Google's AI Overviews unlawfully repurpose content, causing harm to publishers. Penske Media Corporation became the first major media company to sue Google over this issue.

Meanwhile, Google's antitrust case in China has been dropped, marking a significant turn of events for the tech giant.

In a separate case, both Google and Amazon are under investigation over whether they misled advertisers on search ad pricing. This investigation lands just ahead of Amazon and Google's separate federal antitrust trials set for September 22.

Amazon is expanding its programmatic integration with SiriusXM, and is also adding programmatic guaranteed deals and private marketplace options for advertisers buying audio inventory.

On the regulatory front, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered seven AI companies to explain how they assess chatbot risks for children and teens.

In Australia, the eSafety Commissioner has emphasized the importance of compliance being kind, careful, and clear when enforcing the under-16 social media ban. The onus on platforms to find workable solutions for enforcing the under-16 social media ban in Australia falls on the platforms themselves. Australia has issued fresh guidance on enforcing this ban.

France is reportedly considering a probe into TikTok regarding children's safety, adding to the pressure on the social media platform.

These developments highlight the ongoing scrutiny faced by tech giants and the evolving regulatory landscape they operate in. As these legal battles and expansions unfold, the tech industry will continue to be a dynamic and intriguing space to watch.
