Google UK Reports 2024 Revenue Growth, Faces £25bn Legal Claim
Google UK has reported a rise in turnover and pre-tax profits for 2024, while also announcing significant investment in the country. However, the tech giant faces a substantial legal claim over its alleged dominance in online search advertising.
Google UK's turnover climbed from £2.81bn to £2.89bn in 2024, with pre-tax profits increasing from £373.8m to £403.3m during the same period. Despite these positive financial indicators, the company's headcount decreased from 7,422 to 7,029 in 2024.
In a boost for the UK's digital infrastructure, Google is set to open its first owned and operated data centre in Waltham Cross. This move follows a pledge by the company to invest £5bn into the British economy over the next two years, with plans to bolster AI-powered projects in science and healthcare, creating more than 8,000 jobs.
However, Google is currently facing a £25bn legal claim in the UK. The lawsuit, brought on behalf of an estimated 500,000 to 1.5m UK advertisers, alleges abuse of dominant position in online search advertising. The UK government, however, has signed a partnership with Google Cloud to modernise public services and upskill civil servants, indicating a continued relationship between the two parties.
Google UK's financial growth and investment plans signal a commitment to the country's digital landscape. Despite the ongoing legal challenge, the tech giant's data centre expansion and government partnership highlight its significant role in the UK's technological future.
