Google's Wallet now demands location access for detailed receipts that come with maps included.
Google Wallet App Now Requires Location Permission for Detailed Receipts
As of late July 2025, the Google Wallet app on Android requires location permission to display detailed receipts that include store addresses and maps. This change means users must enable the app’s "Precise location" permission to see merchant name, address, and a map linked to their transactions.
Before this update, detailed receipts with maps and addresses appeared automatically without any permission needed. However, since the change, location access is required and turned off by default. Users are prompted with a message like: "Get detailed receipts, like merchant name and address, for future tap-to-pay transactions."
Enabling location permission affects only new transactions going forward; past receipts remain unchanged and do not retroactively show map or address details after permission is granted. Google made this change to improve user privacy by explicitly requesting location permission rather than turning it on silently.
Key points:
- Before late July 2025, detailed receipts with maps and addresses appeared by default.
- After late July 2025, location access is required and turned off by default.
- Users are prompted with a message like: "Get detailed receipts, like merchant name and address, for future tap to pay transactions."
- Enabling location for Google Wallet restores the map on new receipts only; no retroactive updates occur.
This location permission requirement was officially integrated in the period of late July to early August 2025 and is designed to enhance transparency and privacy for users regarding location data usage in receipts. It's important to note that this change does not affect the functionality of the app itself, but rather the information displayed on the detailed receipts.
In addition to this update, Google Wallet has also added support for a seventh state ID on Android. However, it's worth mentioning that Google Wallet is losing PayPal integration in the US, with accounts being deleted on June 13. This change does not affect the location permission requirement or the display of detailed receipts in the Google Wallet app.
