Hacktivist Group Mysterious Team Bangladesh Targets Australia in DDoS Attacks
Cybersecurity experts have identified a hacktivist group, known as Mysterious Team Bangladesh, which has been actively conducting cyber attacks since June 2022. The group, expressing strong pro-Bangladeshi views, has targeted entities worldwide, with a significant portion of its activities focused on Australia.
Mysterious Team Bangladesh is notorious for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, having carried out over 850 such incidents since its inception. This accounts for 88.4% of its overall activity, with occasional cases of website defacement and database access. The group's primary targets are logistics, government, and financial sector entities in India and Israel. However, its influence extends beyond, with Australia being one of the top three targeted countries.
The group's attacks are often religiously motivated, with incidents triggered by perceived criticism of Islam. For instance, in February, Dutch and Swedish entities were targeted following a Quran-burning incident. More recently, in March, an Australian fashion designer's use of Arabic text for Allah on garments led to DDoS attacks on Australian entities. Mysterious Team Bangladesh conducts multi-wave campaigns focused on specific countries, including Australia, which accounts for 12.3% of its DDoS attacks.
Cybersecurity firm Group IB warns that Mysterious Team Bangladesh is expected to intensify its attacks in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East in 2023. Despite the group's name, there is currently no information available about the identity of its leader.
Mysterious Team Bangladesh, a hacktivist group with strong pro-Bangladeshi sentiments, has been actively conducting cyber attacks, predominantly DDoS, since June 2022. With a significant portion of its activities targeting Australia, the group's religiously motivated attacks highlight the need for robust cybersecurity measures. As warned by Group IB, the group is expected to intensify its attacks in various regions in the coming year.
