Hamburg bolsters its reputation as a research powerhouse with the addition of another Center of Excellence for a local university, according to the German Research Foundation and the Science Council in Bonn. This new cluster will focus on materials research at the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH), complementing the four existing centers of excellence at the University of Hamburg (UHH) that have been confirmed under the federal and state excellence strategy.

Since 2018, UHH has been recognized for its excellence in research, boasting clusters in the fields of astrophysics, climate research, photon sciences, and manuscript research. The confirmation of these clusters has extended UHH's status as a "University of Excellence" for a further seven years.

In addition to its research focus, UHH emphasizes knowledge transfer through various initiatives. One such initiative is the Management Transfer Lab (MTL), which aims to nurture entrepreneurship and facilitate the transfer of research findings to the economy and society. Another initiative, the Science and Transfer Center Active City, concentrates on promoting physical activity and sports in urban areas.

Though not mentioned in the announcement, additional research centers at UHH include the Center for Better Work, which explores the future of work and workplace health promotion.

  1. The Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) plans to establish a community policy focused on materials research, aligning with UHH's existing Centers of Excellence in climate research and photon sciences, aiming to further bolster Hamburg's standing as a research hub.
  2. In light of UHH's ongoing efforts to promote knowledge transfer, the Management Transfer Lab (MTL) strives to foster entrepreneurship and link research discoveries to the economy and society, further bridging the gap between academia and vocational training.
  3. With environmental issues like climate-change at the forefront, the Science and Transfer Center Active City at UHH contributes to the field of environmental-science by focusing on promoting physical activity and sports within urban areas, while the Center for Better Work delves into data-and-cloud-computing and the future of work, leveraging technology to maintain the health and well-being of the workforce.
