Revving Up with Royal Enfield: India's Boutique Behemoth Soars over Harley, BMW, and KTM
Harley, BMW, and KTM overshadowed by the expansive influence of Royal Enfield?
India isn't just known for its Bollywood blockbusters or bustling bazaars. It’s also home to a motorcycle powerhouse that gives Japan and China's motorcycle manufacturers a run for their money, according to some industry insiders.
Time to rethink who's at the top of the motorcycle manufacturing game? If we're crunching numbers by revenue, stalwarts like Harley-Davidson and BMW take the lead. But if we're talking about sheer production volume, especially when we narrow it down to beefy mid-range motorcycles, Indian motorcycle maker Royal Enfield snags the crown.
Kai Petermann, the man behind Royal Enfield's distribution in Germany, mourns, "We don't manufacture peppy 125cc engines, which dominate production numbers for other manufacturers. We don't churn out mopeds, light motorcycles, or similar vehicles." Instead, the Indians focus on beating the drum for mid-range motorcycles with engine capacities ranging from 250cc to 750cc. And they've got the proof—finally hitting the 1-million mark in production last fiscal year, clocking in 1,009,000 units on the meter.
Breaking down their engine lineup, they offer four series: a 350cc single-cylinder, two 440cc and 450cc air-cooled single-cylinders, and a 650cc twin-cylinder. The newest addition to their arsenal, a 450cc single-cylinder with liquid cooling, debuted in 2023, now gracing the Himalayan adventure bike and the Guerilla naked bike.
Indian Premium: Royal Enfield's Growing Glory
Surging steadily in India, Royal Enfield is no longer just a local heavyweight—it also packs a punch in Asia and the western world. The manufacturer, already a premium player in its home market, is making significant moves in Asia and Europe. In performance-oriented Germany, for instance, Royal Enfield has been on the top 12 volume brands for motorcycles for years, according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
In 2025, Royal Enfield is putting its foot on the gas, honing in on expanding its presence in the twin-cylinder segment. The formidable "Bear 650" and "Classic 650" models will be added to their roster by the end of the year, escalating their portfolio to a whopping 12 models, available in an expansive range of variants and colors.
The most affordable bike in the collective gonna cost you €4,490, while the priciest Super Meteor 650 "Celestial" sets you back €8,390. The new "Bear" models range from €7,640 to €7,890, and the new Classic 650 falls between €7,090 and €7,390. Last but not least, an electric motorcycle is on the cards, too.
Reaching German Shores: Royal Enfield Sets Up Shop
Eager to please more German customers, Royal Enfield is beefing up its presence in the country. "We're ramping up our service game and planning to set up a German subsidiary," says Petermann. They're planting roots in Freiburg this fall, ready to step up the service and distribution game across Germany.

*Note: While Royal Enfield has garnered impressive numbers and growth in mid-range motorcycles, it's important to acknowledge that this success doesn't diminish the standing of Harley-Davidson, BMW, or KTM in their respective segments. These manufacturers continue to lead, albeit in different categories and contexts.
