Historic Partnership: Pioneering Semiconductor Company Establishes Initial Plant in Japan - Ceremonial Handshakes Signify a Milestone Moment
In the heart of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, TSMC's first plant—a strategic partnership with Toyota and other Japanese firms—is set to revolutionise the automotive industry. The new facility, opened on February 24, is a significant step towards enhancing supply chain resilience and fostering next-generation automotive technologies.
The global semiconductor shortage, which has disrupted automotive production worldwide, is a pressing issue. The new plant, producing advanced 6-nanometer chips crucial for automotive applications, aims to reduce Japan's reliance on geographically vulnerable supply chains centred in Taiwan or China. By aligning semiconductor manufacturing more closely with automakers’ technological evolutions, the plant is poised to meet the growing demand for semiconductors in vehicles.
Modern electric and autonomous vehicles require thousands of chips for functions such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), AI object recognition, battery management, and infotainment. With Japanese OEMs like Toyota increasingly transitioning to electric and software-defined vehicles, having a nearby and dependable chip supplier like TSMC is essential to maintaining production continuity and innovation pace.
This partnership aligns with broader geopolitical and economic strategies, including Japan’s $550 billion investment package with the U.S., designed to build resilient semiconductor and automotive supply chains outside China’s influence. Japan aims to strengthen its domestic and allied manufacturing capacities, leveraging technology partnerships and investments to ensure supply security and lead the evolution of automotive technology, particularly in intelligent mobility and autonomous systems.
TSMC, based in Taiwan, has a subsidiary called Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), which has received additional investment from TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Denso, and Toyota. The opening ceremony of the TSMC plant in Japan was attended by Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota, and TSMC CEO C.C. Wei, sealing their commitment to this groundbreaking partnership.
