Historic Thyssen TM 170 SPV Joins Police Classic Museum
A historic police vehicle has joined the collection at the Police Classic Museum in Marburg. The new addition is a Thyssen TM 170 Special Police Vehicle (SPV) from North Rhine-Westphalia, dating back to 1979. This air-supported, armored vehicle was widely used by German police in the 1960s and 1970s, including during the 'German Autumn' incidents in 1977.
The Thyssen TM 170 SPV was primarily used by the police in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly by the Mobile Einsatzkommando (MEK), the Bereitschaftspolizei, and the special unit of the Schutzpolizei. However, it was not a permanent fixture in daily police operations, but rather a vehicle used for special deployments. The exact date of its last use in NRW is unknown, but it was phased out by the end of the 1970s in favor of more modern, less conspicuous vehicles like those from MAN or Mercedes-Benz. Today, the TM 170 SPV is no longer in active service with the NRW police, with most examples having been scrapped or preserved in museums like the one in Marburg.
The Police Classic Museum, located on county road 69 near the district of Cyriaxweimar, will host a special event on September 21, 2025. The event will showcase over 110 historical police vehicles, including the newly acquired Thyssen TM 170 SPV. The event is free and open to the public from 11 am to 5 pm.
