Huge 364-foot superyacht designed for seamless integration of cruising and scientific exploration launched
The Dutch brand Oceanco has been making waves in the yachting industry with its latest project, the gigayacht "Leviathan." This 364-foot vessel, launched in June, represents a new philosophy of yachting that places greater purpose at the heart of design, ownership, and operations.
Leviathan's exterior features composite decks and capping rails, and the full-glass-height bulkheads come without the usual stainless-steel trim. The yacht's architecture was a collaborative effort between Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco, with exterior design by Oceanco and interiors by Mark Berryman Design. A distinctive grey-on-grey aesthetic complements its eco-conscious systems, while a tri-fold beach club, programmable LED lighting, and honed stone and natural wool carpets contribute to its luxurious and versatile performance.
One of the key innovations of Leviathan is its diesel-electric power system with battery storage. This system minimizes emissions and optimizes energy use, making it a more sustainable choice for luxury cruising. The yacht is also designed with human-centric principles in mind, enhancing crew-guest interactions and promoting purposeful onboard use rather than just aesthetics.
Leviathan is conceived as a working ecosystem supporting not just hospitality but also scientific research. This unique feature sets it apart in the gigayacht category, blending luxury cruising with advanced sustainability and operational innovation. After sea trials, Oceanco will release more details about Leviathan.
Oceanco's diesel-electric propulsion and battery banks are common among the largest superyachts, including Leviathan. The vessel's design process involved the captain, crew, and over 2,000 designers, engineers, and experts. A plaque near the main stairs lists everyone involved in the design of Leviathan.
With four projects over 80 meters (262 feet) under construction, Oceanco is at the forefront of future-focused yachts that combine high-volume luxury, sustainability, and versatile performance. Leviathan, with its innovative design and sustainability approach, is a shining example of this trend.
