IBM's Cloud encounters a Grade One issue, displaying identical symptoms as previous system disruptions

IBM Cloud, a significant player in the cloud market, has faced another major outage on Monday, August 11, 2025. This incident, which lasted approximately 2 hours and 23 minutes, affected 27 services across 10 global regions[1].

This latest outage is part of a series of service disruptions that IBM Cloud has experienced over recent months. According to reports, there have been at least four notable outages within a three-month span (May to August 2025), frequently causing degraded service and login failures for enterprise customers[1][2].

Experts suggest that these recurring incidents stem from foundational architectural problems within IBM Cloud’s control plane, viewed as a single point of failure that needs urgent resolution[2]. Reports indicate that issues such as updates to IBM’s Logs service have created unexpected internal traffic spikes, overwhelming the Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM) system, which is critical for user authentication and access[2].

Historical outage data tracked by monitoring services confirms a pattern of service disruptions and degraded performance, alongside IBM’s public incident reports[3][4][5]. These incidents have highlighted systemic challenges in IBM Cloud’s infrastructure during this period[1][2].

Despite these challenges, IBM reported 21% year-over-year growth for its hybrid infrastructure offerings. The recent debut of new mainframe and Power hardware has also contributed to IBM's revenue growth[6].

IBM Cloud, however, is not typically listed among the world's top five cloud providers, which usually include AWS, Microsoft, Google, Alibaba, and Huawei[7]. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna's growth strategy is focused on an open hybrid cloud platform and AI capabilities[8].

During the outage, customers may have experienced service outages, degraded performance, or inability to access IBM Cloud services. IBM’s engineers were actively investigating the issue and assessing the scope of impact at 12:59 UTC, with significant recovery reported by IBM at 14:09 UTC[1].

However, our website reached out to IBM to ask if these incidents were linked but did not receive a response.

Despite the ongoing challenges, IBM Cloud remains a player in the cloud market, with a focus on open hybrid cloud platforms and AI capabilities. Users are advised to clear browser cache and retry if experiencing login issues.
