If the sale of TikTok to an American company is not approved by China, the popular social media app will reportedly face a ban starting in September, according to a Trump administration official's warning.
TikTok Faces September Deadline as U.S. Law Looms
TikTok, the popular social media platform, is facing a critical deadline on September 17, 2025. This date marks the end of a grace period granted by the U.S. government, mandated by the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The law requires TikTok's U.S. operations to be under American ownership and control, or else the app will be banned and forced to go offline in the United States.
Currently, TikTok remains accessible in the U.S., but it is technically operating in violation of this law as no finalized divestiture deal has been approved yet. The U.S. Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, emphasized that the algorithm and technology must be under American control, while ByteDance could keep a minor share.
A deal approved under the Trump administration fell through due to tariff conflicts. Although the current administration claims a new deal is in progress, awaiting Chinese government approval, the deal's success is uncertain. A consortium led by U.S. investors, including Susquehanna International Group and General Atlantic, was the front-runner to own 80% of TikTok's U.S. business, with ByteDance retaining a minority stake. However, a key investor, Blackstone, recently withdrew, complicating the deal further and risking delay or failure before the deadline.
The Chinese government's approval is pivotal. If they refuse to approve the transaction, TikTok will be forced to cease operations in the U.S. U.S. officials have stressed that Chinese control cannot remain if the app is to operate legally in America.
In this complex situation, TikTok's future hangs in the balance. The Chinese government's approval is the critical factor holding up the deal. If no deal is finalized and approved by September 17, TikTok will go dark for American users, marking the end of a popular app enjoyed by millions.
