In the wake of the disastrous earthquakes that hit Myanmar in April 2024, and as concern over seismic threats grows across the Indian subcontinent, Turkish engineering firm TIS has declared its intentions to venture into the Indian market. Known worldwide for providing advanced seismic isolation systems that safeguard essential infrastructure during earthquakes, the company aims to bring its technology to India.

India Faces Earthquake-resistant Solutions from TIS using Proven Technologies

Turkish Firm TIS Aims to Bolster Indian Infrastructure Resilience Amid Seismic Risks

Following the catastrophic earthquakes that hit Myanmar last April and the increasing realization of seismic threat across the Indian subcontinent, Turkish engineering company TIS has announced its intention to penetrate the Indian market. Known globally for specialist seismic isolation systems, TIS offers protection for critical infrastructure during earthquakes.

"India, much like Turkiye, is located on a highly active fault system. We think the time is ripe to introduce our tried-and-tested seismic protection technology and project-based engineering approach to this vital area," said Ugurcan Ozcamur, TIS's General Manager.

The company aims not only to supply equipment but also to collaborate closely with local partners to establish enduring resilience in India's infrastructure.

From Turkiye to the World

TIS, founded in 2012, spent five years dedicated to R&D, rigorous testing, and gaining European certification for its proprietary seismic isolation tech. Since its commercial launch in 2017, it has successfully completed projects in countries like Italy (accounting for around 30% of their current portfolio), Greece, Azerbaijan, Taiwan, Mexico, and Chile.

TIS gained global prominence following the devastating 6 February 2023 earthquakes in Turkiye, where its seismic isolators managed to keep eight major hospitals and public buildings operational during the 7.6 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes.

"TIS is one of the few global companies offering fully integrated earthquake protection solutions, encompassing engineering design, innovative product development, and client-tailored implementation," added Ozcamur.

Berth on Challenging Shores

TIS distinguishes itself not only for the quality of its products but also for its adaptability to intricate structural conditions. In Chile, TIS successfully deployed seismic isolation in lightweight, modular data centres by custom-designing the devices for steel structures. This resulted in a cost-effective, bespoke solution delivered in just three months, leading to six completed projects in Chile with more on the horizon.

"In every country we operate, from Taiwan to Chile, we first analyze local challenges rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach," said Ozcamur. "This is why we are optimistic we can collaborate with Indian architects, developers, and government agencies to elevate earthquake resilience."

A Prime Opportunity

Although TIS has yet to launch a project in India, the firm is actively pursuing local partnerships. Recent seismic events, such as the April 2024 Myanmar earthquake felt throughout northeastern India, have heightened public and institutional awareness of the region's seismic vulnerability.

India's history of significant earthquakes, including the 2001 Gujarat disaster and recent tremors in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Assam, underscores the urgent need for advanced seismic protection. Rapid urbanization in seismically vulnerable areas identifies India as a prime candidate for world-class, custom-tailored earthquake mitigation solutions, with TIS aiming to become a trusted technical partner in both public and private sectors.

About TIS

Based in Turkiye, TIS is an engineering and manufacturing firm specializing in seismic isolation systems, providing earthquake protection technologies that enhance the structural resilience of critical infrastructure. With certified product design, proprietary R&D, and an international portfolio, TIS offers state-of-the-art seismic isolation systems that safeguard buildings and infrastructure from earthquakes, ensuring the preservation of lives and continuity of essential services during seismic events.

  1. As a result of India's location on a highly active fault system, TIS, with its expertise in seismic isolation systems, sees an opportunity to introduce its technology to the Indian market, strengthening infrastructure resilience amid increasing seismic threats.
  2. Beyond supplying equipment, TIS intends to collaborate closely with local partners in India, aiming to establish enduring resilience in the country's infrastructure.
  3. TIS's seismic isolators have proven their effectiveness during seismic events, as demonstrated in Turkiye during the 6 February 2023 earthquakes, where its technology kept eight major hospitals and public buildings operational.
  4. TIS stands out in the industry for its integrated earthquake protection solutions, which encompass engineering design, innovative product development, and client-tailored implementation.
  5. With its ability to adapt to intricate structural conditions, TIS is optimistic about collaborating with Indian architects, developers, and government agencies to elevate earthquake resilience in seismically vulnerable areas, making India a prime candidate for its custom-tailored seismic mitigation solutions.
