Indian Air Force Boosts Threat Monitoring with AI

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to bolster its threat monitoring capabilities with AI-assisted next-gen technologies in its captive networks. This move aligns with global trends as major powers integrate artificial intelligence into their air forces.

The IAF will employ AI to identify outliers in pilot performance, aiding in the development of effective training strategies. AI can also provide models with impeccable logic to determine the best solutions in combat aviation. However, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria acknowledges that this may require redefining or abandoning some traditional combat aviation principles.

The IAF is currently testing AI and AI-based applications on various projects to enhance operational efficiency. Its inventory management is already computerised and digitised, with work underway on AI-based predictive maintenance and threat scenarios. The IAF is also exploring when to employ human supervision and when to rely solely on AI, based on technical logic and questioning.

The integration of AI into the IAF is expected to bring significant changes to how air wars are fought in the aerospace domain. By embracing these technologies, the IAF joins other major powers like the US, China, and European NATO countries in preparing for the future of air combat.
