India's National Highways to Go Satellite-Based Toll by April 2025
India's National Highways Authority is set to introduce a satellite-based toll collection system by April 2025, marking a shift from the current RFID-based FASTag system. The new GPS-enabled solution, using the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), promises to streamline toll transactions and reduce delays.
The GNSS-based system calculates toll charges based on the distance travelled, using onboard units (OBUs) installed in vehicles for tracking movement. During initial trials on a 1,000-km stretch of highways, the system proved effective in enabling seamless toll transactions and reducing bottlenecks.
To ease the transition, the new system will coexist with FASTag during a transitional period, with dedicated lanes for vehicles equipped with GNSS technology. Additionally, a daily exemption of 20km has been introduced for short-distance travellers to reduce costs for local commuters. The Indian government expects this move to save approximately ₹20,000 crore (£1.94bn) annually in fuel and productivity losses due to reduced traffic congestion.
Several companies have been contracted to drive the technical implementation and rollout of the project, including Aarjav Technologies, L&T Technology Services, GMR Group, ICE Gateway, and Tata Technologies. The project, known as 'GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection', aims to make the toll collection process more efficient and automated.
The new GNSS-based toll collection system is set to revolutionise toll transactions on Indian national highways. With its promise of seamless transactions, reduced delays, and significant fuel savings, the system is expected to bring substantial benefits to both commuters and the government. The National Highways Authority of India, with technical support from the Indian Space Research Organisation, will oversee the rollout, ensuring precise and reliable GPS technology.
