Intense rivalry in artificial intelligence field gets a boost as OpenAI debuts the launch of ChatGPT-5, a new, free model

OpenAI's ChatGPT-5 Takes AI to the Next Level

OpenAI, the non-profit AI research company, has made a significant leap in artificial intelligence (AI) technology with the release of ChatGPT-5. The new model, which is currently being used by nearly 700 million people each week, is OpenAI's most powerful AI model yet.

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, described ChatGPT-5 as "clearly a model that is generally intelligent." He mentioned that there are "orders of magnitude more gains" still to come on the road to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

The new model showcases significant improvements in reasoning, accuracy, speed, contextual understanding, and multimodal capabilities compared to its predecessors. It features a new "real-time router" that automatically switches between fast responses and deep "thinking" mode based on query complexity, removing the need for users to select different models manually.

Enhanced reasoning and problem-solving are key capabilities of GPT-5. Its thinking mode boosts accuracy from about 78% to 85.7% on reasoning tasks, showing a substantial leap in handling complex queries. The model also includes a special personalities feature, allowing users to interact with four preset personalities (cynic, robot, listener, nerd) to tailor responses to different contexts and preferences.

GPT-5 has also made strides in reducing hallucinations and improving honesty. The model more accurately detects when it cannot complete tasks and clearly communicates limitations, lowering deceptive or overly confident answers from 4.8% to 2.1% compared to previous models.

Major companies such as Amgen, Morgan Stanley, and SoftBank have reported improved workflows, higher output quality, and speed with GPT-5 integration, demonstrating tangible productivity impacts. The model includes improved multimodal capabilities, enabling it to process and generate responses across diverse data types, enhancing contextual understanding.

In comparison to other AI models like Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s LLaMA, GPT-5 remains highly competitive. However, the AI landscape is dynamic, with competitors investing heavily to close gaps. Google's AI Mode in search and other entrants are gaining ground, emphasizing the intensifying AI arms race.

Industry experts have hailed the release of ChatGPT-5 as the beginning of a new AI era. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, believes the progress in AI will lead to the development of superintelligence. Elon Musk, on the other hand, claims his AI model, Grok 4 Heavy, is smarter than ChatGPT-5.

OpenAI's safety research lead Alex Beutel states that ChatGPT-5 has been trained to be trustworthy and avoid aiding any harmful tasks. The model is designed to produce "safe completions" - responses that avoid sharing sensitive or potentially dangerous information.

Altman describes ChatGPT-5 as feeling like chatting with a PhD-level expert on any topic. The release of these "open-weight language models" comes as the company faces growing calls to be more transparent, in line with its original mission as a non-profit organization.

The new AI models released by OpenAI are freely available to download and customize, in a move aimed at challenging similar offerings from competitors. As the AI race continues to heat up, it remains to be seen how these advancements will shape the future of AI technology.
