International distribution of compostable single-serve capsule technology granted by OxBarrier
In a bid to 'Preserve with Purpose', OxBarrier, a pioneering company in the field, is making significant strides in the single-serve capsule market. With its patented technology granted in over thirty countries, including major European markets, Canada, and Australia, OxBarrier is leading the charge towards sustainable packaging solutions.
The global coffee pods and capsules market, valued at over $58 billion, is not immune to the environmental concerns surrounding waste generation. An estimated 576,000 metric tonnes of capsule waste are generated every year, with many of these ending up in landfills. However, OxBarrier's technology offers a promising solution.
The technology features an integrated oxygen barrier, ensuring that coffee products remain fresh while reducing the environmental impact. In the past year, companies such as ALDI Süd and Tchibo have adopted this technology, joining the ranks of those committed to sustainability.
Meanwhile, Greiner Packaging and Constantia Flexibles have developed a home compostable coffee capsule that won a WorldStar Packaging Award this year. This eco-friendly capsule, anticipated to help customers make progress in their internal sustainability commitments, is also meeting consumer demand for high-performance, compostable single-serve solutions.
The joint initiative between Podback and Morrisons has already seen over 10 million coffee pods being recycled in 2025. The top performing Morrisons store recycled 5 tonnes of coffee pods in just over six months, demonstrating the potential for large-scale recycling.
Taner Ertan, global business development manager at Greiner Packaging, provided more information about the home compostable coffee capsule. He emphasized that with OxBarrier's technology, brands can offer compostable capsules without sacrificing quality or shelf life.
Recognizing the need for industry-wide change, OxBarrier has launched an international technology licensing program for its patented compostable single-serve capsule technology. This move is aimed at facilitating the transition to sustainable single-serve packaging at scale, helping the industry meet its sustainability goals while catering to consumer preferences.
With these developments, the future of single-serve coffee capsules is looking greener and more sustainable. As more companies adopt these eco-friendly solutions, we move one step closer to preserving our planet with purpose.
