Introducing the JHS Pedals 424 Gain Stage: A Modern Take on Vintage Tones

JHS Pedals has unveiled its latest creation, the 424 Gain Stage, a stompbox that harnesses the iconic tones of the vintage Tascam Portastudio 424. This preamp pedal, inspired by Mk.gee's use of a Tascam 424 in his guitar rig, promises to deliver rubbery clean tones, high headroom, and smashed-out fuzz, reminiscent of the early '90s portable 4-track recorder channel.

The 424 Gain Stage boasts a simple control layout, featuring one footswitch and parameters for Volume, Bass, Treble, Gain 1 (Trim), and Gain 2 (Channel). The Trim control emulates the Portastudio 424's trim control, adjusting the amount of preamplification added to the input signal. The Channel fader is represented by the Gain 2 control, setting the volume level of the second gain stage. The two-band EQ offers bass and treble controls that cut or boost frequencies, allowing for tonal shaping akin to the original Portastudio channel.

The pedal offers regular jack I/Os and a balanced XLR output with a ground lift switch for wider rig assimilation. The XLR output enables direct connection to mixers or audio interfaces, ensuring a clear signal without unwanted noise. The silent, soft touch switching and buffered bypass ensure minimal noise and signal integrity when engaged or bypassed.

The 424 Gain Stage is compact, measuring 2.6" x 4.8" x 1.6", and requires a 9VDC center negative power source, consuming 50mA. It is available for $249 and JHS Pedals has more than a thousand units in stock, ready to ship.

JHS Pedals, known for its cryptic riddles, sonic easter eggs, and image grids on Instagram, has created an authentic and perfectly replicated single channel strip of the Tascam 424 without any official affiliation with Tascam. The 424 Gain Stage packages the vintage, lo-fi, retro-styled preamp tones into a standard-sized pedal, making it accessible for modern musicians seeking that distinctive sound.
