Roku Launches Affordable Ad-Free Streaming Service: Howdy

Roku, the popular streaming device manufacturer, has entered the streaming service market with the launch of a new ad-free platform called Howdy. Priced at just $2.99 per month, Howdy offers a vast library of movies, TV shows, and select Roku Originals, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious viewers.

Howdy's content library is impressive, featuring titles from major entertainment partners such as Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise. Notable movies and shows on the platform include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Blind Side, Weeds, Kids in the Hall, Nikita, Dirty Dancing, Reservoir Dogs, and Elvis. The service aims to provide "comfort fare" and is targeted at viewers who want an affordable, ad-free option to complement, not compete with, premium streaming platforms.

Initially, Howdy will be available exclusively on Roku devices, the Roku app (Android and iOS), and via Roku’s website. Subscribers can sign up or cancel anytime. The service is currently only available in the US.

Roku's decision to enter the streaming service market comes after the hike in prices by popular streaming platforms like Netflix and Peacock. Netflix's premium plan now costs $24.99 a month, while Peacock bumped up its prices last month, and its ad-free plan now costs $16.99 a month.

Howdy's launch follows Roku’s recent acquisition of FrndlyTV, a live TV streamer. FrndlyTV provides users access to 50 live channels, including the History Channel, A&E, and the Hallmark Channel. While Howdy includes some Roku Original titles, it is not intended to directly compete with Netflix and other streamers but rather, complement them.

In addition to Howdy, Roku offers The Roku Channel, a free, ad-supported TV platform, which accounted for 2.5% of all television viewing in the U.S. this past June. Roku has also signed a major advertising deal with Amazon Ads, giving advertisers access to more than 80 million U.S. households.

In summary, Howdy offers an attractive, budget-friendly streaming option for viewers who want ad-free, easy viewing. With its vast library of content and partnerships with major entertainment companies, Howdy is set to make a significant impact in the streaming market.
