Investment firm Acre Venture Partners supports GenAI technology in New Product Development (NPD) through their investment in Zucca, signaling a shift towards tech being essential for commercialization in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) sector.
Zucca, a Seattle-based startup, has raised $5 million in a recent funding round to help mid-market CPG brands and R&D teams launch products faster with the help of AI. The company, which was incubated in startup studio Pioneer Square Labs (PSL), offers an AI platform specifically designed for food and beverage product development workflows.
Jesse Guzman, co-founder of Zucca, previously worked at Rain, NerdWallet, and Prophet. Other investors in Zucca include PSL Ventures, AIStudio Fund (funded by Mayfield), and Sugar Mountain Capital. The startup's unique selling proposition is its ability to de-risk the product development process by allowing teams to explore multiple product concepts in parallel.
Zucca's platform streamlines product development by allowing deeper, parallel exploration of multiple product ideas, reducing reliance on single bets. It also tailors AI support to the particular needs and stages of food and beverage R&D workflows, using cutting-edge AI built on leading models (OpenAI, Anthropic) customized for the CPG space.
For larger companies, Zucca can foster rapid innovation and improved collaboration across teams, departments, and geographies. For small and mid-size CPGs, Zucca can accelerate innovation at low cost. The startup targets individuals with job titles such as director of product development, commercialization director, brand leader, innovation leader, or head of R&D.
Zucca operates on a tiered SaaS model, charging by the seat. There are two types of seats: editor access seats (more expensive) and viewer seats. The startup currently has a team of five and is working with about a dozen partners in beta testing.
Karen Huh, previously at Oobli, Bulletproof, and Starbucks, has joined as CEO of Zucca. Early feedback from potential customers was "really quite powerful" and highlighted the platform's unique capabilities and potential. Acre Venture Partners believes Zucca's technology will become "core to commercialization efforts," similar to ERP systems.
The startup's focus is on the end-to-end product development process, from ideation to formulation to sourcing. Zucca is also exploring per job-based pricing options. As the company grows and refines its platform, it aims to continue revolutionizing the food and beverage industry with AI.
