Jaguar Land Rover Hit by Cyberattack, Temporarily Closes Factories
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the British luxury car manufacturer, has been struck by a cybersecurity incident, leading to temporary factory closures. The National Crime Agency has apprehended four individuals in connection with recent ransomware attacks on the retail sector, including JLR.
JLR's global IT systems were impacted by the cybersecurity incident, forcing the company to tell factory workers to stay home until Tuesday. This is the latest in a series of cybersecurity attacks on British household names, following similar incidents at Marks & Spencer, the Co-op, and Harrods earlier this year.
A group calling itself 'Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters' claimed responsibility for the attack on JLR, suggesting collaboration between the Scattered Spider, Lapsus$, and ShinyHunters cybercrime groups. JLR proactively took down its systems to mitigate the impact, resulting in staff being stood down on Friday and Monday. Britain's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office, has confirmed that JLR reported a data breach incident.
Operations at JLR's production and retail facilities were severely disrupted. There is no evidence that any customer data has been stolen, but the company's retail and production activities have been significantly impacted.
JLR, which reported revenues of £28.99 billion last year and employs over 39,000 people worldwide, has faced challenges beyond the cybersecurity attack. Pre-tax profits dropped by 49% in the second quarter of this year, partially due to a pause in exports to the United States. The company is now focusing on recovering from the cybersecurity incident and minimizing further disruption to its operations.
