Kazakhstan and Rwanda Step Towards a New Phase of Mutual Cooperation

ASTANA - President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described a recent meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame as the start of a new era in Kazakhstan-Rwanda relations, marking a potential increase in collaboration across various strategic sectors.

During Kagame's official visit to Kazakhstan, which took place ahead of the Astana International Forum, Tokayev acknowledged the potential for stronger ties, highlighting Kazakhstan's leading position in regional GDP, the development of IT technologies, and artificial intelligence as key areas of focus for partnership.

Rwandan economic growth and expanding opportunities provided the perfect backdrop for enhanced collaboration, Tokayev noted.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of sectors for possible expansion in their bilateral relationship, including politics, trade, economy, transportation, logistics, agriculture, and digital transformation. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues.

In anticipation of the visit, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu met with Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, to explore opportunities in trade, logistics, the defense industry, and digitization.

Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the legal framework, encouraging regular high-level exchanges, and leveraging the increasing role of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route in the interconnectedness of global markets.

Kazakhstan proposed organizing mutual trade missions to foster business connections and promote interaction between chambers of commerce. The countries discussed the potential for cooperation in the IT sector, particularly through Astana Hub, Central Asia's largest tech park.

Despite a decline in bilateral trade, with Kazakhstan importing goods from Rwanda and no known exports, both nations expressed ambition to deepen economic cooperation. Rwanda has expressed interest in various sectors including startup development, electronics, geological exploration, education, healthcare, strategic investment, supply of vaccines, and certain minerals.

The evolving Kazakhstan-Rwanda partnership harnesses the unique strengths of both nations - Kazakhstan's logistics expertise, mineral resources, and digital transformation capabilities, along with Rwanda's dynamic economy and foothold in East and Southern Africa. This new partnership promises mutual economic benefits and enhanced global collaboration.

The leaders of Kazakhstan and Rwanda recognized the potential for collaboration in various strategic sectors, such as finance, business, technology, politics, and general news, during their discussions about expanding their bilateral relationship. The Kazakhstan-Rwanda partnership, emphasizing Kazakhstan's logistics expertise, mineral resources, digital transformation capabilities, and Rwanda's dynamic economy, aims to bring mutual economic benefits and enhanced global collaboration.
