UK Home-Grown Tech Firms Shine in AI and Environmental Technology

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, several UK home-grown firms are making significant strides in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and environmental technology. These companies are not only pushing the boundaries of innovation but also navigating a complex set of challenges.

Record-Breaking Funding for Biodiversity Firm

One such firm, NatureMetrics, recently secured $25m in a Series B funding round, marking the largest ever closed for a biodiversity firm. The investment, announced on the NYC Nasdaq Tower, is backed by Al Gore's Just Climate and the Monaco ReOcean Fund. NatureMetrics' 'Nature Intelligence Platform' supports over 600 clients in more than 110 countries, making it a global leader in biodiversity monitoring.

Fintech Success Stories

In the fintech sector, Abound and Tembo Money are making waves. Abound, a fintech firm that modernizes lending through AI-powered credit decisioning, reported remarkable financial results for the year to February 2025. With revenue hitting £68.5m and a net profit of £7.5m, the company is setting new standards in the industry. Abound's success is attributed to its 'Render' platform, which uses open banking insights to offer lower rates to consumers while minimizing default rates.

Tembo Money, a fintech firm focused on making mortgages and savings more accessible, also saw impressive growth. By the end of 2024, Tembo Money had revenue of £6.4m, a dramatic jump from just £815,000 two years prior. The firm raised £14m in a Series B funding round in November 2024.

AI-Enabled Tele-Radiology Platform

Hexarad, an AI-enabled tele-radiology platform, has supported diagnoses for over two million NHS patients. The platform, developed by consultant radiologists, aims to streamline the allocation and reporting of scans. After securing its first investment in 2021, Hexarad raised £11m in August 2024 to expand its platform further.

AI Voice Cloning and Music Creation

ElevenLabs, a tech firm founded by academics from Imperial, Oxford, and Cambridge, is making waves in the AI industry. The company's products include AI voice cloning and multilingual dubbing, and they recently launched Eleven Music, a tool for creating studio-grade music from text prompts. In response, ElevenLabs has secured licensing deals with digital publishing platforms Merlin Network and Kobalt Music Group. However, the company enters a competitive and legally fraught market, with concerns about AI music and potential lawsuits from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

ElevenLabs' success is evident in its recent funding round. In January 2025, the company raised $180m in a Series C round, tripling its valuation to $3.3bn. The firm's products are also expanding, with the launch of Eleven Music demonstrating its commitment to innovation in the AI space.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite these success stories, UK home-grown tech firms focused on AI and environmental technology face several challenges. These include digital sovereignty and infrastructure dependency, talent acquisition and retention, capital intensity and market scale, and regulatory and procurement barriers. However, strong government policy commitments, funding initiatives focused on net zero and AI innovation, and increased market demand for sovereign technologies offer significant growth and competitive opportunities within both domestic and international arenas.
