Latvia Launches Full-Scale Production of VRF Military Off-Road Vehicles
Latvia has marked the beginning of full-scale production of VRF military off-road vehicles, a significant step for the country's defence industry. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed the deal, although the financial details remain undisclosed.
The VRF vehicles, developed specifically for the needs of the National Armed Forces (NBS), were first presented in autumn 2022. They are expected to be delivered to the NBS in early 2027, with an initial purchase of more than 30 vehicles. The production of these vehicles will involve local companies, contributing to supply chain security and the development of the Latvian defence industry.
The MoD has shown support for defence industry companies and innovation. Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds (Progressives) has confirmed this commitment. VR Cars, a local company, received a grant from the MoD in 2020 to develop a new tactical vehicle prototype. The company tested its prototype with the National Armed Forces, demonstrating the potential of local innovation in defence technology.
