Launched: Bike-sharing service commences operation
Bremen Introduces Modern Bike-Sharing System "Bre.Bike"
From April 1, 2025, Bremen residents and visitors can enjoy a more sustainable and modern commuting option with the launch of the city's new bike-sharing system, Bre.Bike. The system, operated by Nextbike GmbH, boasts an initial fleet of 1,100 standard bicycles, with 40 cargo bicycles to be introduced in coming weeks. By autumn 2025, the fleet is set to expand to a total of 1,450 standard bicycles and 60 cargo bicycles, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility in the northern German city.
The cargo bicycles, unlike conventional bicycles, will be assigned to fixed mobility points and can only be rented and returned there. Notably, Bremen-Nord is fully integrated into the system for the first time. To celebrate the launch, the City of Bremen is offering a free trial month with 30 free minutes per ride. Afterwards, rates start at 99 cents for 30 minutes.
Nextbike GmbH, selected as the provider after a Europe-wide tender, promises comprehensive service, regular inspections, and quick responses to reported problems. Defined parking regulations aim to ensure barrier-free and safe use in public spaces. A spokesperson from Nextbike, Marco Weigert, Director DACH, states, "We are excited to drive the mobility transition forward and take Bremen to a new level."
Bre.Bike presents a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility in Bremen. As part of a broader urban development vision, the mobility strategy aims to link cycling with public transport more seamlessly. While details on technical integration, such as unified ticketing, are yet to be specified, ongoing projects, like the development of new tram lines, suggest integration is a priority.
Bre.Bike’s environmental emphasis aligns with best practices in urban mobility across Europe. The city promotes the system as part of a move towards "sustainable mobility for all," highlighting the environmental benefits of reducing car dependency and supporting clean, active transport.
The new bike-sharing system, Bre.Bike, will not only focus on regular bicycles but also introduce cargo bicycles, marking a shift towards technology-driven, sustainable transportation. As the city expands its public-transit options, finance will play a crucial role in integrating Bre.Bike with other transportation methods, such as trams, for a seamless commuting experience. The technology-driven and environmentally-friendly approach of Bre.Bike reflects Bremen's commitment to prioritizing sustainable finance and public-transit industry solutions.
