LEGO has unveiled an exciting new addition to its Transformers line with the release of a set featuring Soundwave, a beloved Decepticon character known for his unique design and intricate transformation mechanics.

Soundwave, a key member of the Decepticon faction, was chosen as the first Decepticon in the LEGO Transformers line due to his iconic status and challenging transformation, offering a creative opportunity for LEGO designers. Unlike Megatron, the Decepticon leader, Soundwave is a distinctive character known for his role as a Decepticon spy and master of communications. He is famously recognised for transforming into a microcassette player, accompanied by his cassette companions, Ravage and Laserbeak.

The design team at LEGO highlighted Soundwave's importance and saw his transformation into cassette mode as a fascinating challenge that allowed them to create a complex and dynamic build. The design of the smaller accompanying figures, Ravage and Laserbeak, presented significant difficulty as they had to fit perfectly into Soundwave’s cassette slot while being stable, buildable, and poseable. This complexity made Soundwave an exciting project for LEGO designers and offers fans a highly detailed and faithful collectible.

By choosing Soundwave over Megatron, LEGO aims to celebrate a fan-favourite character with a unique form and intricate transformation mechanics, providing a balanced representation of both factions with characters that offer distinctive building experiences. The new set complements the previously released Autobot leader Optimus Prime and Bumblebee sets.

The LEGO Soundwave set, priced at $190, consists of 1,505 pieces and is available for pre-order from July 1 and for general sale on August 4. The set includes models of Laserbeak and Ravage, and features an opening cassette bay for the included models. The Lego Soundwave can be transformed into his cassette tape alt-mode without disassembly, and the set includes a built-in sound brick that plays specially recorded classic Transformers voice lines and sound effects.

Members of the LEGO Insiders VIP program can purchase the Lego Soundwave a day earlier, on August 1. The new set is available for viewing and pre-order at LEGO.com.
