LG Introduces 2025 Top-Tier OLED Televisions Featuring Record-Shattering Luminescence, Sophisticated AI Functions, and 165Hz Gaming Compatibility

LG has piqued the interest of CES attendees in Las Vegas this week by revealing its 2025 lineup of top-tier "Evo" OLED TVs from the M5 and G5 series, which are brimming with new features to delight movie and gaming aficionados.

The OLED Evo M5 and OLED Evo G5 series will both feature LG's enhanced Alpha 11 Gen 2 processor, which, according to LG, utilizes increased power and advanced AI and machine learning capabilities to enhance picture and sound quality, surpassing the already acclaimed G4 series.

The second-generation Alpha 11 processor can, for example, more meticulously analyze and refine low-resolution and low-quality images to deliver sharper and more natural upscaling results, while a new 'Professional' grade of LG's renowned dynamic tone mapping system offers users and calibrators a new level of color and detail precision when customizing and fine-tuning HDR images for all viewing environments.

On the audio side, the latest Alpha 11 processor boasts the ability to output all sound sources, even basic stereo, in a virtual 11.1.2 surround sound configuration, providing supposedly improved tonal balance and clarity.

The most apparent sign of progress from LG's 2024 premium Evo OLEDs will likely come from the new M5 and G5 screens' brightness. A new Brightness Booster Ultimate system, which combines advanced pixel color and light control courtesy of the new Alpha 11 processor with the latest so-called 'four stack' OLED panel designs, is said to increase brightness levels three times that of conventional OLED TVs.

LG has not disclosed the exact number of nits for the new Evo OLEDs' increased brightness and has emphasized that this increase applies only to specific screen sizes, such as the 55, 65, 77, and 83-inch G5 and M5 models. Based on the brightness performance of last year's B4s and G4s, we can likely expect 1900 nits or higher on a 10% window for the new models, possibly more on smaller measuring windows.

LG emphasizes that this extra brightness improves detailing at various brightness levels without compromising OLED's reputation for premium pixel-level light and color control. LG's new Evo screens even garnered "Perfect Black" and "Perfect Color" verification from independent assessor UL Solutions, as well as 100% color fidelity verification from Intertek and "Quick Stability with Image Quality" certification from TUV Rheinland.

The M5 and G5 TVs introduce the Filmmaker Mode's real-time adaptive setting functionality for LG OLEDs for the first time, allowing Users to enjoy a consistent HDR experience regardless of how bright or dark their rooms are.

Gaming Enhancements

The big gaming enhancement for LG's 55, 65, 77, and 83-inch G5 models is the addition of 4K/165Hz variable refresh rate gaming signals support (an upgrade from the previous 4K/144Hz limit), while the M5 series now supports wireless video transmission between their external connection boxes and screens for gaming signals up to 4K/144Hz.

Both the M5 and G5 TVs are also compatible with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium VRR systems and are the first sets to receive ClearMR 10000 certification by VESA, demonstrating their exceptional motion clarity and smoothness.

AI Advancements

As I predicted in my article last year on the increasing use of AI in televisions, LG devotes ample space in its information about its new Evo TVs to their AI features. The new AI Picture and Sound Wizard features claim to analyze more than 1.6 billion image settings and 40 million sound profiles to help users customize their audio and visual settings to their personal preferences and needs.

The new AI Remote included with 2025's LG Evo TVs includes a dedicated AI Button that opens a new AI Concierge homepage, displaying personalized recommendations based on user viewing habits. Alternatively, holding down the AI Button activates the new AI Voice ID feature, which can recognize various household members' voices and automatically switch to their personal content recommendations and settings.

In select territories (the U.S., U.K., and South Korea), a new AI Search feature on LG's 2025 Evo TVs can leverage a Large Language Model to better comprehend conversation context and detect subtle user intentions, with the process further streamlined through Microsoft Copilot access. All territories will benefit from the latest version of LG's excellent AI Chatbot feature, allowing the TV to troubleshoot potential issues or answer questions about your LG TV without requiring LG customer service assistance.

Lastly, on the AI feature front, a new Generative Image Gallery enables users to create custom background images simply by providing the software with a few key image content terms to work with.

webOS for Years

The latest iteration of LG's webOS smart platform now supports multi-platform integration with the Home Hub, enabling it to control more Internet of Things devices. LG is also continuing its webOS Re:New program, allowing buyers of the new Evo TVs to expect upgrades to their webOS platforms for up to five years.

It's clear from this article that the main distinction between the fresh M5 and G5 Evo OLED models lies in the fact that the M5s are engineered to operate virtually wire-free. An external connection/transmission device is employed to transmit 4K/144Hz videos and lossless Dolby Atmos audio wirelessly to the screen.

The 83-inch G5 has garnered the CES 2025 Best of Innovation award, while the 83M5 has grabbed an Honorable Mention title in the Video Display category.

As of now, LG hasn't disclosed the pricing details for its newly launched Evo OLED TVs. However, those attending CES 2025 from January 7 can get a sneak peek at these new displays at booth 15004 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
