LG's Latest Lamp-Projector Elicits Affection Reminiscent of a Mother's Love Towards Moths
LG poses an intriguing query: What if your table lamp had more tricks up its sleeve? Their newest projectors sport a 3-in-1 design, integrating a speaker and projector lens within a circular lamp housing. Just ensure to dim the lamp for the projected image to illuminate your living room wall.
In a press announcement, LG disclosed that its 3-in-1 PF600U was inspired by a floor lamp. The lamp portion itself is a basic LED bulb, capable of emitting multiple colors for "mood lighting" in your home or movie nights. The design deviates from the conventional desk lamp, with its bright orb center absent.
The projector's brightness is the main drawback, at only 300 lumens. The projected screen size ranges from 30 to 120 inches at FHD (1,920 by 1,080) resolution. The sound is provided by two passive radiators, which may not deliver theater-quality audio. Its height is around 38 inches, which means the best projection and lighting you can expect is from chest height.

The lamp's head must be rotated vertically on a hinge to access the projector end situated along the rim. The lamp head can tilt 110 degrees, making ceiling-viewing movies challenging unless you wish to lay the pole on your lap. This device is unlikely to replace your television due to its low brightness level, meant for nighttime viewing or dimly-lit areas in your home. Instead, it may provide a secondary screen and additional light in your den, be it the bedroom or bathroom. If you wish to conceal your screen addiction from visitors, the 3-in-1 could serve as a discreet solution.
LG also presented a new compact 4K projector, called the CineBeam S. This device offers 500 ANSI lumens, though it still pales in comparison to conventional projectors. It supports a wider color gamut than the lamp and can project up to a 100-inch screen size on your wall through its top lens. It can project to a wall even when sitting directly in front, supporting Dolby Atmos and incorporating Auto Screen Adjustment features for your wall's specific image size and color.

Several compact projectors like the Xgimi MoGo 3 and Anker Nebula Capsule Air are available, boasting designs that permit projection on both the ceiling and the wall. Despite its small size, the CineBeam S is intended to serve as a TV alternative rather than a portable device. Its square body fails to convey "projector" in the traditional sense, allowing it to blend in as an unusual candle holder on your TV cabinet.
I still prefer last year's CineBeam Qube, which resembles an old-fashioned film projector rather than the CineBeam S' contemporary aesthetics. All devices use LG's webOS to access your streaming services. LG did not provide any release schedule or pricing details, so we may need to wait until CES to gather more information.
There's a growing trend of devices concealing speakers or projectors within everyday household items. Last year, Samsung launched a speaker housed within a picture frame. The $400 Music Frame delivered crisp, loud sound, although its limitations in size and restricted compatibility with Samsung's Q-Symphony for surround sound setups were noted.
In the future, we might see technology evolve to incorporate speakers and projectors into more household items, similar to LG's 3-in-1 projector lamp. With advancements in tech, these devices could potentially deliver theater-quality audio and brightness, surpassing current limitations.
The integration of technology into everyday items like lamps or picture frames could revolutionize how we consume media at home, offering a more discreet and design-friendly solution for secondary screens or additional lighting.
