Light Up Almaty: City's Street Lighting Transitions to Automatic Control by 2025

Get ready to experience brighter and smarter nights in Almaty! By the end of 2025, the city administration plans to replace 800 outdated cabinets managing outdoor lighting, switching to fully automated control, our website reports.

The transition to smart lighting control is a crucial step toward modernizing Almaty's infrastructure. Igor Mysyk, the head of GКP "Almaty Kalajaryk", explained that this upgrade will significantly reduce power outages, speed up the detection and repair of malfunctions, and ensure uninterrupted and high-quality outdoor lighting. In fact, previous power outages affecting 60% of lines were primarily due to the wear and tear of the existing equipment.

The city's makeover doesn't stop at the streetlights. Architectural and decorative lighting has become an important focal point. By 2025, 70 iconic buildings, including KazNU, Kurmangazy Conservatory, and Baluan Sholak Sports Complex, will be illuminated, along with train stations, the "Sunkar" ski jump, and more.

Last year, lighting work on 56 historical and cultural monuments was completed, and the 28 Panfilov Heroes Park underwent a transformation—470 lamps were replaced, 6 km of cable lines, and 450 automatic switches were installed.

Looking ahead, this year, the Akimat plans to restore 52 km of cable lines, install 487 lighting poles, and replace over 2500 lamps in the Ауэзовский district.

Almaty's Akim, Yerbolat Dosaev, announced during a meeting with Jetisu district residents that this year, work will begin on lighting up 600 previously unlit sections of the city, installing 4,500 light points, and continuing the construction of lines with a total length of 136 km. The ultimate goal—achieving 100% lighting of urban spaces.

This smart lighting development falls under the Smart City Reference Standard approved by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Digital Development in April 2025, indicating a strategic alignment for smart lighting projects in cities like Almaty. The plan involves replacing a total of 2,800 outdated lighting cabinets, with modern smart ones expected to reduce power outages and provide better system reliability. Additionally, the smart lighting control system will offer comprehensive management and monitoring of public lighting, promoting energy efficiency and improved visual environments.
