Manufacturer reaches milestone of 1,000 ultra-fast charging stations, adding 20 new charging bays to network each week
**UK Rapid Charging Network Expands with Motor Fuel Group's Expansion**
The UK's rapid charging network is experiencing a significant expansion, with over 80,000 public charge points across nearly 40,000 locations as of May 2025. This growth represents almost a doubling over two years and is a result of substantial government and private sector investment.
One of the key players in this expansion is Motor Fuel Group (MFG), a traditional fuel retailer that is pivoting towards electric mobility. MFG has embarked on a major EV charging network rollout, aiming to retrofit hundreds of its fuel forecourts with ultra-rapid chargers and partner with third-party charging providers.
MFG has already completed 1,000 ultra-rapid charging bays under the MFG EV Power banner, with chargers ranging from 150kW to 400kW. The company started rolling out the network in 2018 and has now developed 300 charging hubs in Morrisons supermarket car parks. Another 150 ultra-rapid bays are due to be installed by MFG in the next three months, bringing the total to 1,250 bays.
The charging hubs are located across 170 hubs nationwide, with more than 150 MFG sites located inside the M25. MFG acquired the former Morrisons forecourt network in 2024, giving it a significant presence within the M25, holding approximately 20% of the market.
MFG's charging hubs are designed for 'on-route' convenience, focusing on high-powered, multi-bay facilities. The company aims to futureproof its charging infrastructure with this expansion, positioning itself as a key player in the UK's rapidly growing EV charging market.
As of now, MFG EV Power accounts for around 12% of all ultra-rapid public chargers in the UK. With plans to install a total of 3,000 ultra-rapid chargers by the end of the decade, MFG is set to play a significant role in the UK's transition to electric mobility.
Once the expansion is complete, Morrisons will offer one of the most extensive public charging networks of any UK supermarket. In addition, around 400 new rapid chargers are being added to the UK network every month, indicating a rapid build-out of the rapid charging network in the UK.
Despite this progress, challenges remain in ensuring equitable access, reliability, and commercial viability—especially in rural areas. The sector is well-positioned for further growth, with aggressive targets set for the remainder of the decade. MFG's expansion is a testament to the UK's commitment to a sustainable future and a growing electric vehicle market.
- To support the UK's growing electric vehicle market, Motor Fuel Group (MFG) is investing in renewable energy by expanding their EV charging network, with the aim of installing 3,000 ultra-rapid chargers by the end of the decade.
- As MFG continues to finance and develop advanced technology for data-and-cloud-computing, they are partnering with third-party providers to ensure the reliability and commercial viability of their expanding charging network, particularly targeting rural areas.
- In aligning with the government's ambitious targets for a sustainable future, Motor Fuel Group is integrating advanced technology in their rapid charging infrastructure, positioning themselves not only as a key player in the UK's EV charging industry but also as a leader in the wider field of renewable energy.
