Frankfurt/Main (dpa/tmn) - The anticipated launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 is none other than "Mario Kart World," a dynamic creation from the legendary gaming powerhouse, Nintendo.

It's no wonder that this game has taken center stage, given the enduring popularity of its prequel, Mario Kart 8, which has been a top seller on the Switch since its debut nearly a decade ago.

A Fresh, Exciting Spin on Classic Racing

What sets "Mario Kart World" apart is its open-world racing experience. Instead of limiting players to individual, closed-off tracks, they now have the freedom to explore a vast, engaging world — a throwback to "Forza Horizon" for hardcore racing enthusiasts.

In addition to traditional game modes like Grand Prix, Time Trials, and Versus Races, the game offers a thrilling Battle Royale-inspired mode called Knockout Tour. Here, up to 24 players pounds the pedal on a long, linear track, with the bottom four players knocked out after each section until only four remain. The first across the finish line reigns supreme!

Brand-New Characters and Costumes Galore

While the classic racing characters such as Mario, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser make a return, "Mario Kart World" also boasts many new faces, with a cow quickly rising into fan-favorite territory. Moreover, several characters come with numerous costumes to keep your racing style fresh!

Whether Mario Kart World's content warrants its price — around 80 euros for the digital version and 90 euros for the physical version — remains to be seen. The game hits shelves on June 5, unrated, alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. Both game and console can be purchased in a bundle. Keep in mind that online gameplay modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Reviews for Mario Kart World have been generally favorable, praising its enjoyable gameplay and new features while acknowledging some areas that could use improvement. The open-world racing experience has received a mixed reception; some critics find it underwhelming compared to other racing games with similar features, while others appreciate the vibrant graphics and catchy music. The game's multiplayer options, which support up to 24 players, are a hit, with increased item drops to accommodate more players. However, elimination can feel frustrating at times, particularly in competitive modes. Overall, Mario Kart World is pegged as a strong addition to the series, though some features like the open world could benefit from further refinement. Full reviews should emerge soon!

Gadget enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the new technology in the Nintendo Switch 2, as the launch title, Mario Kart World, showcases the latest in gaming innovation. The open-world racing experience, a feature reminiscent of popular gadget-driven games like Forza Horizon, promises to redefine the classic racing genre.
