Mattel, the renowned toy company, has hit the brakes on its flagship Hot Wheels Virtual Garage NFT program, halting new releases of NFT series and feature drops "for the foreseeable future." The decision comes as the toy giant reconsiders its long-term strategy in the digital collectibles universe.

The official announcement was posted on Mattel's website, stating, "As we delve into the shifting landscape of virtual collectibles, we've realized the time has come to bring a stop to our Series and Feature Drops in 2025 and beyond." Mattel launched its NFT venture in November 2021, making it one of the first toy brands to enter the NFT arena.

In the driver's seat

Mattel partnered with Worldwide Asset eXchange (WAX) for its NFT debut, offering collectors digital collectibles and redeemable die-cast cars. A total of ten NFT series were released, with the final drop happening in December 2024. Mattel guarantees that all existing and outstanding redemptions will be fulfilled as promised, including iconic models like the Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 and the classic TV series Batmobile.

Keeping your collection

Though users can't currently transfer their NFTs to external wallets or marketplaces, Mattel is looking into future options and will keep the community updated. The toy giant has no immediate plans to revive the program, but it's cooking up a long-term strategy. NFT-holders can keep buying, selling, and trading on the Mattel Digital Collectibles Marketplace, and the "My Collection" portal and Discord community will stay operational through at least 2025. Customer support will continue during this period, too.

Brands re-evaluating their NFT efforts

Legacy brands across industries are grappling with the aftermath of early NFT hype and associated legal fiascoes. Recently, Nike was hit with a $5 million proposed class action lawsuit over its handling of RTFKT, a digital fashion startup it acquired in 2021. Allegations include promoting unregistered securities and violating consumer protection laws.

Mattel's Web3 trek

Mattel didn't hesitate to expand its Web3 footprint beyond Hot Wheels. In 2023, it teamed up with the women-led crypto brand Boss Beauties to launch Barbie NFTs celebrating the doll's diverse career personas. It also partnered with Balmain in 2022 to introduce a Barbie and Ken NFT collection. Additionally, Mattel launched its own NFT marketplace on the Flow blockchain, enabling peer-to-peer trading and hinting at plans to tokenize more iconic brands.
