McDonald's has announced impressive sales figures for Q2 2023, with the global fast-food giant attributing a significant portion of its success to the Minecraft Movie Meal promotion. The promotion, which was the largest global promotion in McDonald's history, resonated well with both gamers and moviegoers, driving up sales both in the U.S. and internationally.

The Minecraft Movie promotion, which started on April 1, 2023, featured meals inspired by the movie that included popular items like the Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, along with exclusive Minecraft-themed collectibles. The adult meal, in addition to the usual offerings, included one of six collectibles based on characters from the movie and game.

In the U.S., same-store sales rose by 2.5%, marking the highest growth rate since late 2023. This growth was driven by positive check growth from the Minecraft promotion. Globally, same-store sales increased by 3.8%, expanding across all major markets. System-wide sales grew by 6%, boosted by both same-store sales and new unit growth, while revenues rose 5% to $6.8 billion. Net income increased 11%, reaching $2.3 billion.

CEO Chris Kempczinski noted that McDonald's technology investments and digital solutions are elevating the customer, crew, and global system experience. The company has been using a combination of value offers and marketing to attract customers, and this strategy seems to have paid off in Q2 2023.

Over the past 12 months, McDonald's digital efforts have generated $33 billion in sales in its top 60 markets. In the last quarter, the company generated $9 billion from its MyMcDonald's Rewards loyalty program alone. Data from Placer.ai indicated that the Minecraft Movie promotion helped drive traffic to McDonald's restaurants.

The success of the Minecraft Movie promotion comes at a time when McDonald's sales have been sluggish over the past year, primarily due to the economic environment and consumer frustration over prices. The introduction of new offerings like the McCrispy Strips, a chicken tender competitor, during the period also seems to have contributed to the sales boost.
