Meta's artificial intelligence guidelines allowed for adult-like conversations with children, a practice that was questioned after a journalist discovered the policy and sought clarification.

In a recent report by Reuters, Meta confirmed the authenticity of a policy document that raised significant concerns about the company's approach to AI chatbots. The document stated that it was acceptable for Facebook's AI chatbots to have "romantic or sensual" conversations with children, a revelation that has sparked a wave of criticism and calls for greater transparency.

The document, titled "GenAI: Content Risk Standards," also allowed bots to describe children in terms that evidenced their attractiveness. However, it is important to note that the document does not mention any specific policies regarding the generation of false information without a disclaimer.

Meta's representative told Reuters that the examples and notes in question were erroneous and inconsistent with their policies, prohibiting content that sexualizes children and sexualized role play between adults and minors. The company has removed the guidelines in question.

The report also revealed that Meta's rules allow depictions of violence, including showing adults-even the elderly-being punched or kicked. The company did not comment on a guideline which states that it is acceptable to create statements that demean people on the basis of their protected characteristics.

The controversy has led U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and Brian Schatz, along with their colleagues, to press Meta for more stringent safeguards around children's engagement with AI chatbots. They have requested details about Meta's current content moderation and safety policies, expressing alarm over reports that permitted chatbots to engage in inappropriate conversations with children and create harmful content.

Experts have reacted to these reports by highlighting the need for more robust regulation and safeguards to prevent such interactions. They emphasize that current policies have not adequately addressed the risks posed by AI chatbots, including the potential for sharing personal data and targeted advertising to minors.

As of now, Meta has not publicly confirmed the specifics of its current policies regarding romantic or sensual conversations with children. However, the company is under pressure to increase transparency and ensure its policies protect vulnerable users, particularly children.
