Netflix Experiments with AI-Powered Search and Vertical Video Content - Netflix Introduces AI-Powered Search and Premium Video Clips

Netflix is revolutionizing its streaming service with the integration of artificial intelligence. Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone shares that users will soon be able to search for movies and TV shows in a more intuitive manner by typing descriptions like, "something scary but not too scary - and maybe a little funny too." This futuristic technology is being developed in partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.

In another innovational move, Netflix is testing a feature that allows users on their smartphone app to browse through clips from Netflix shows in a vertical format, mimicking popular social media platforms such as TikTok. This change aims to make popular shows more discoverable to users. Product Chief Eunice Kim emphasizes that users can easily transition from these clips straight to the full movies or TV shows.

New User Interface

Netflix is also enhancing the user interface of its TV and streaming stick apps. The redesign places live broadcasts, a relatively new feature on the platform, at the forefront. Recommendations will become more adaptable, adjusting to user activity and the time of day.

With approximately 700 million viewers, Netflix must ensure that its audience continues to find content that interests them amidst the vast library of movies and TV shows. The platform heavily relies on recommendation algorithms to help users navigate their content. In the competitive streaming landscape, Netflix competes with Hollywood studios like Disney or Paramount, as well as tech giants Apple and Amazon.

This revamp in Netflix's AI capabilities brings a more personalized and conversational approach to content discovery, bridging the gap for users who may normally turn to external platforms like Google or TikTok to find something to watch. With this new feature, users can simply describe their desired viewing experience, and Netflix's AI will generate a list of relevant shows or movies, enhancing user engagement and satisfaction on the platform.

  3. Amidst the sea of clips from Netflix shows on the smartphone app, snippets are displayed in a vertical interface similar to popular social media platforms like TikTok.
  4. Eunice Kim, Product Chief at Netflix, confirms that users can seamlessly transition from these vertical clips to the full movies or TV shows once they catch their interest.
  5. The transformation in Netflix's AI capabilities creates a more personalized and conversational method for users to discover content, potentially reducing the need for externally searching through Google or TikTok.
