New railway sections spanning 7 kilometers activated on Lot 4 at the Ales̩d-Hungarian border, marking a significant achievement for Egis' oversight operations.
Cluj-Napoca to Episcopia Bihor Railway Line: Progress on Lot 4
The Cluj-Napoca to Oradea to Episcopia Bihor railway line rehabilitation project, specifically Lot 4 (Alesd - Hungarian Border), has made significant strides in 2025. The first section of this railway line between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian border was electrified by July 31, 2025 [1].
Egis, a global firm specializing in architectural, consulting, construction engineering, operations, and mobility services, has played a crucial role in this project. They have overseen the progress, ensuring that all work meets the requirements and that every phase is executed efficiently and safely, in line with project specifications. In July of this year, Egis commissioned the first 7 km of new railway within Lot 4 Alesd - Hungarian Border [2]. Another significant section of Lot 4 is expected to be commissioned in the near future.
The completed works on LOT 4 Alesd - Border span from km 0+660.74 to km 7+088.32 and include embankments and railway superstructure in the Episcopia Bihor station and between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian Border, installation of catenary poles and anchors, installation of signaling cables, completion of 13 underpasses, and construction of 2 culverts [3].
The works on Lot 4 are carried out under traffic, requiring complex organization and temporary works to maintain circulation [4]. Despite the challenges, the project enables travel speeds of 160 km/h for passengers and 120 km/h for cargo, while improving travel conditions, safety, and interoperability with ITS [5].
The rehabilitated section, now in operation, allows the resumption of railway traffic, currently with restrictions (maximum speed 50 km/h), until the completion of the entire lot. Upon completion, the maximum speeds will be 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains [5].
The Cluj Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor railway line is divided into four lots, with Lot 3 (Poieni - Alesd) and Lot 4 (Alesd - Hungarian border) covering a total of 100 km [6]. The project supports environmental sustainability by promoting efficient transport and reducing emissions [7]. It also advances social equity by improving accessibility for people with disabilities and ensuring safe transit for all users [8].
The rehabilitation project for the Cluj-Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor - Border railway line is funded by PNRR funds [9]. The project enhances Romania's economic competitiveness through sustainable transport infrastructure, EU integration, and improved connectivity to the European network [10].
