IAB Tech Lab Announces New Standards for Live Streaming Advertising

In an effort to revolutionize the digital advertising landscape for live streaming events, the IAB Tech Lab has unveiled a new set of proposed standards. Known as the Live Event Ad Playbook, these standards are designed to improve ad delivery during high-demand live moments, enhancing monetization potential for advertisers and improving the quality of live streaming for viewers.

The core of these standards is the Concurrent Streams API, a specification that provides real-time data on concurrent streams. This API allows advertisers and platforms to better manage ad delivery during surges in live viewership, a common occurrence in sports, news, and cultural live streams.

The standards also support new technical frameworks that foster collaboration and standardization across platforms, addressing the challenges of live ad insertion at scale, particularly during unpredictable audience spikes. The four-phase initiative, known as LEAP, modernizes live event streaming ads by building a resilient and standardized infrastructure to serve ads reliably during massive and unpredictable audience surges.

The IAB Tech Lab's Live Event Ad Playbook addresses the technical complexity of seamless live streaming at scale and the difficulty of inserting ads during peak concurrency moments. By simplifying the monetization of live streaming events, the new standards help advertisers capitalize on high-impact opportunities while preserving a smooth, uninterrupted viewer experience.

The Live Event Ad Serving Working Group, formed by IAB Tech Lab, has been instrumental in developing these standards.
