Next-Generation TV Deployments Update: Where and When will ATSC 3.0 be Rolled Out Across the U.S.? (As of 1/23/2025)

NextGen TV Gains Momentum Across the United States

The rollout of NextGen TV, also known as ATSC 3.0, is gathering pace across the United States, with over 80 markets currently transmitting the advanced television standard. This development covers approximately 75% of the U.S. population and reaches around 96 million households (258 million viewers) in 73 of the Top 100 TV markets.

According to the Consumer Technology Association, more than 120 million NextGen TV sets are expected to be sold by 2024. As of mid-2025, over 14-15 million NextGen TV-capable televisions and devices are already in consumers’ hands, with an additional 5 million units projected to ship by the end of 2025.

NextGen TV broadcasts are enhancing the viewer experience with features like high dynamic range (HDR) including Dolby Vision available in up to 84 million households, Dolby Atmos audio in about 69 million households, and interactive applications for 70 million households. These figures are projected to grow by 2025.

Broadcasters from all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico have adopted a resolution calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a date-certain transition plan that includes a formal sunset of ATSC 1.0 to fully move to NextGen TV. This coordinated effort among industry players is aimed at accelerating the transition to NextGen TV.

The deployment of NextGen TV is not limited to urban areas. In rural regions like Colebrook, New Hampshire, New Hampshire PBS planned to start ATSC 3.0 broadcasts as of early September 2025, demonstrating the wider signal reach and targeted emergency alerting benefits of the technology.

However, the industry is urging the FCC to set a firm transition timeline to accelerate production and adoption of compatible devices. The lack of regulatory clarity has slowed down the process more than broadcasters had hoped.
