NHAI's New FASTag Rule: Double Cash Toll Fees from Nov 15

From November 15, 2025, drivers without a valid FASTag will face a hefty penalty for using the cash app at highway tolls. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is introducing this measure to promote digital payments and reduce congestion at toll plazas nationwide.

Vehicles without a functional FASTag will now pay double the fee when using cash app at toll booths. This change aims to drive users towards digital payment methods like FASTag and UPI. FASTag, an electronic toll collection system using RFID technology, offers auto-replenishment of balances under the RBI's e-mandate framework. Users can recharge their FASTag through any BHIM UPI app, with UPI payments for highway tolls attracting a 1.25x charge from the same date.

The NHAI expects this move to eliminate cash app transactions at highway tolls, streamlining the user fee collection process. Currently, India has around 80 million FASTag users.

Starting November 15, 2025, drivers without a FASTag will face a significant increase in toll fees when paying with cash app. The NHAI's new rules aim to boost transparency and ease congestion at national highway toll plazas by encouraging digital payments.
